Spider veins are capillary veins which are easily visible through the skin, and generally appear as tiny webs of red, blue, or purple lines.

Varicose veins are enlarged veins in the leg that appear like twisted, bulging cords and progress to Chronic Venous Insufficiency if left untreated. Varicose veins can cause aching pain and discomfort and sometimes lead to more serious complications signaling a higher risk of circulatory problems. For others, varicose veins and spider veins are simply a cosmetic concern.

When blood clots in the deep veins of the leg, it is known as a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Patients may experience leg pain and swelling caused by the DVT, but the presentation is variable, and some patients can feel just a mild ache. DVT is a serious medical condition for several reasons, but the most concerning is the risk that a piece of the clot breaks off and travels through the blood stream into the heart, and then to the lungs.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a progressive medical condition that worsens over time and affects the veins and vessels in the leg that carry oxygen poor blood back toward the heart.

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is caused by arteriosclerosis, or “hardening of the arteries.”This problem occurs when fatty material (plaque) builds up on the walls of your arteries and causes the arteries to become narrower. The walls of arteries also become stiffer and cannot widen (dilate) to allow greater blood flow when needed. As a result, when the muscles of your legs are working harder (such as during exercise or walking), they cannot get enough blood and oxygen, which results in symptoms such as leg pain.

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a disorder characterized by throbbing, pulling, or other unpleasant sensations in the legs, as well as an uncontrollable urge to constantly move the legs. Symptoms occur primarily at night and are usually relieved by movement or walking.

Procedures

Sclerotherapy is a procedure for treating spider veins and small varicose veins. An FDA approved medicine called Asclera™ (polidocanol) is injected into the vein using a small needle. This medicine results in a chemical reaction inside the lining of the vein which ultimately results in venous closure. Most insurance carriers cover sclerotherapy sessions as part of an overall treatment plan for venous reflux disease or as a separate entity depending on the insurance plan. For our patients with Medicare, sclerotherapy is a covered benefit and can be easily scheduled in office. For most other insurance plans, a pre authorization has to be obtained prior to scheduling.

Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat venous reflux disease (also called chronic venous insufficiency). Using ultrasound guidance, a laser fiber is placed in the refluxing vein through a small venous access. Laser energy is then used to close the vein permanently. Once the procedure is completed, the blood is re-routed to healthy veins. EVLT is highly effective in the treatment of venous reflux with a long term success rate of over 97%. For our patients with Medicare, Laser Venous ablations are a covered benefit and can be easily scheduled in office. For most other insurance plans, a pre authorization has to be obtained prior to scheduling.

Radio Frequency ablation is an alternative method of treating venous reflux disease which also utilizes thermal or heat energy similar to EVLT. The procedure is minimally invasive and can be performed in an outpatient setting. For our patients with Medicare, Radio frequency ablations are a covered benefit and can be easily scheduled in office. For most other insurance plans, a pre authorization has to be obtained prior to scheduling.

The VenaSeal closure system is the only non-tumescent, non-thermal, non-sclerosant procedure that uses a proprietary medical adhesive delivered endovenously to close the vein. This unique approach eliminates the risk of nerve injury when treating the small saphenous vein, which is a risk sometimes associated with certain thermal-based procedures. Clinical studies have demonstrated that the procedure is safe and effective. The procedure is administered without the use of tumescent anesthesia, avoiding patient discomfort associated with multiple needle sticks. For our patients with Medicare, VenaSeal is a covered benefit and can be easily scheduled in office. For most other insurance plans, a pre authorization has to be obtained prior to scheduling.
